Figurative Ceramic Sculpture

Art, for me, is a means of accessing and exploring deep, personal levels of Self. I am inspired by symbols and metaphors that are often of ancient origin and are drawn from cultures from around the world. I believe that these intuitive attractions are spiritual connections with Universal Consciousness. Much of my work has a numinous dimension that resonates powerfully for me and for the viewers.

For over ten years, my sculpture has focused on exploration of the feminine psyche and portrayal of the power of feminine energy. Also, the focus has expanded to include the unification of masculine and feminine energies, beyond gender, in the sense expressed by the spiritual thought of the cultures of Asia.

Currently, I am creating art works using Mesoamerican symbols and centered on cross-border communication between North American and Mexican

communities. I have recently completed a twenty-foot high, walk-through public archway in the form of the Virgin of Guadalupe located on a hillside in a border community in Tijuana.  It is constructed of ferroconcrete and completely surfaced with brightly colored ceramic elements and tile.

Free standing and wall-hung relief sculptures  are made primarily with clay slabs, in abstracted forms of the human figure combined with elements from animals and plants, as well as ancient and personal graphic symbols. The surfaces are multi-fired to produce varied color effects which are often enhanced with post-firing paint details.
